Keys To Responsible And Sustainable Tourism

Tourism is one of the sectors that generate the most wealth in the world economy, in fact, it accounts for 10 per cent of the world’s GDP. However, mass tourism has caused an increase in pollution and environmental degradation in many of the main destinations. Therefore it is necessary to be aware and reduce our ecological footprint when travelling.

responsible tourism

Many countries have already made it clear that it is essential to increase sustainable and responsible tourism that respects the environment and local culture. How can we achieve it? From we offer you a series of recommendations and tips!

Respect, Eco-friendly Options And Environmental Education

First, before arriving at the destination, look for information about the city or country. Know its history, culture, religion or gastronomy. One of the most important points if we want to make a more responsible tourism is to have respect for customs, culture and traditions. If you travel to a country with a different culture, you don’t exoticize people and remember to ask before taking pictures.

When choosing accommodation, consider those agencies, hostels or hotels that are committed to the ecosystem and that offer eco-friendly options. Responsible consumption that avoids plastics would be ideal. Once you are at your holiday destination, you can choose to use public transport to move or walk, avoiding the car.

Tourism generates a large amount of solid waste and it is important to become aware of the biodiversity of the place where we are going, generate the minimum amount of garbage and reuse or recycle as much as possible.

Local Production And Experiential Tourism

Promoting the local economy through responsible consumption and purchase is another key to sustainable and responsible tourism. Use the services of the local population, consume in local stores or buy zero kilometre products.

If you are going to travel to protected areas, remember not to take “gifts” from nature’s spaces and do not buy products made from plants or animals. In addition, if you want to see local fauna, prioritize places where they are protected before those where they are exploited. When making excursions remember not to generate or litter in spaces or natural reserves and always go with local guides. Do not forget to try the gastronomy of the destination!

An alternative trend is what is known as experiential tourism. What is this practice about? Immerse yourself in the culture living with local people in your home to learn about their customs, their work, gastronomy and routines. A great way to foster interculturality.

Machine Learning To Translate Sign Language In Real Time

One of the possibilities of Artificial Intelligence is through automatic voice and text translations. It is true that the precision, although it improves with the passage of time, does not yet reach a professional level. But on a communicative level, and in certain languages, this technology meets the needs well.

translate sign language

There are more difficult languages than others, of course. Translating from English to French or Spanish is relatively simple for an automatic translator. But doing it from Arabic or Chinese to English is significantly more complicated. And with sign language, the task is twisted even more.

There are some initiatives aimed at recognizing sign language, but usually, require high power equipment. From the Google AI laboratory, they have created, however, a system capable of generating an accurate map of the hand and your fingers only with a smartphone.

The system is based on machine learning to capture hand movements. The camera of the smartphone and the power of the phone itself are sufficient to detect even the gestures of several hands. This is not easy, because in the movement the fingers collide with each other, are placed again and do everything very quickly.

A Thorough Training

Just as people need to study to learn a language, the system developed within Google to translate sign language needs training. To optimize its operation, it has been decided to recognize the palm, on the one hand. From there the fingers are analyzed separately.

Another algorithm is set in the image and assigns 21 coordinates. They are points that have to do with the positions, the distances of the knuckles and the tips of the fingers.

To make this happen, a thorough training was needed. The researchers manually added these 21 coordinates to 30,000 images of hands, with different signs and different light. This meticulously kneaded database is the one that nourishes the machine learning system.

All this is used to determine the position of the hand. From there, it is compared to a database of known gestures. The result is hopeful. The algorithms have yet to be polished, but they are a promise of improvement of existing systems to translate sign language. The most interesting: the low need for resources. Just a smartphone and your camera.
